ROSSBURG, Ohio – Alex Bergeron left no doubt about his status as the iRacing World of Outlaws Sprint Car World Championship favorite with a dominant victory in Monday night’s race at the virtual Eldora Speedway.
Bergeron topped qualifying, won his heat race, paced the warmup session and then led all 35 laps of the main event at the digital half-mile dirt track for his third win of the season.
“Tonight was good. Our car was rolling really well,” Bergeron said. “It was a little bit tough during the middle of the race; the track was very, very rough to run. Luckily we were able to hang onto it and win the race. David (Heileman) was very fast and he’s always been fast here, but to be able to beat him here – knowing it’s his best track – is very satisfying.
“We put in the work and it paid off, and to get a win at Eldora is huge for our team.”
The triumph – Bergeron’s record-extending 12th career series score – extended his point lead to 25 markers over Heileman with two races remaining to be run.
It also gives Bergeron momentum heading into the penultimate race on the schedule, held at the track the 20-year-old Canadian calls his “favorite on the calendar” in Williams Grove Speedway.
“Next week is going to be fun, I think,” Bergeron noted. “You never know what can happen in this series, but Williams Grove is a track I really enjoy and have always done well at. I don’t know what to expect, but I know the bottom is my favorite place to run there. The top lane came in last year and David ran us down, but the first task there is always to go out and focus on making the feature first, then we can worry about the rest of it all.
“We’ll do our best, but hopefully that’s a place where we can go out, do what we did tonight and take one step closer to a championship.”
Heileman’s runner up finish, albeit 1.598 seconds back of Bergeron, kept him in the second spot in the standings over third-place James Edens, who filled out Monday’s race podium.
Shaun Timmerman and Tyler Schell were fourth and fifth, respectively, followed by Kendal Tucker, Dillon and Austen Semmelmann, Colton Hardy and Lewis Hewett.
Reigning eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series champion Zack Novak finished 11th at Eldora and sits 19th in points – just 16 tallies out of the top 15 – with two rounds remaining.
The World of Outlaws iRacing Sprint Car World Championship season continues May 18 at the virtual Williams Grove Speedway, where Bergeron is the defending race winner.
