JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – Jake Neuman held off a determined challenge from Holley Hollan to win Friday’s 20-lap midget feature at Jacksonville Speedway.
Neuman started from the pole and took the lead at the start as sixth-starting Hollan began her march to the front. By the eighth circuit Hollan was challenging Austin O’Dell for second as Neuman continued to lead.
Hollan was able to get by O’Dell for the second spot on the ninth circuit and quickly began her pursuit of Neuman. With five laps left Daison Pursley came to a stop in turns three and four, allowing Hollan to close the gap on Neuman at the point.
Neuman continued to lead Hollan when the field returned to racing, but the return to action was brief as Emerson Axsom came to rest in turns three and four to bring out another caution period.
With four laps left racing resumed and Hollan hounded Neuman for the race lead. With two laps left Hollan made her move, sneaking under Neuman through turns three and four to take the lead as the field raced towards the white flag.
With Hollan to his inside Neuman stayed glued to the top and was able to carry enough momentum out of turn two to regain the lead down the backstretch. Hollan tried to get back under Neuman in turns three and four, but Neuman held serve to beat Hollan to the finish line by about a car length.
O’Dell finished third, followed by Jesse Love and Shelby Boise.
In other action, Paul Nienhiser picked up the victory in the 305 sprint car class.
